Parents often ask what actually happens during our activities ā are the children just petting the ponies, or is there something deeper going on?
The answer: A lot more than you might think.
Our sessions are designed around real horsemanship skills (aligned with the British Horse Society foundations), but taught through play, curiosity, and relationship-building. Children learn by doing ā and ponies are the best teachers.

What children experience
Understanding the pony
Before anything else, we learn to notice how the pony feels. Is she relaxed? Unsure? Curious? By observing ears, eyes, posture, and movement, children begin developing emotional awareness and empathy ā skills they naturally transfer to friendships and school life.
Safe handling & awareness
We practise approaching, leading, and positioning ourselves safely around a large animal. Our miniature ponies are the tiniest of their breed, standing 6ā8āÆhh (2ā2āÆft 8āÆin tall at the shoulder) ā roughly the height of a large dog or small toddler ā making them perfect for young children to meet and groom safely. As natural prey animals, horses can be cautious and easily startled. Learning to approach them calmly teaches children patience, empathy, and confidence.
Care & responsibility
Gentle touch, rhythm and connection support the release of calming and bonding hormones (endorphins and oxytocin), helping children feel relaxed, settled and emotionally secure. Grooming, checking hooves, and preparing tack teaches routine and accountability. Ponies depend on them ā and children rise beautifully to that responsibility.
Problem-solving in real life
The pony wonāt always do what we expect. Instead of āgetting it rightā, children learn to pause, think, adjust, and try again.
Balance, coordination & body control
Whether on the ground or riding, they discover how their own body affects the pony. Quiet hands, steady breathing, and balanced posture make a big difference ā and confidence grows naturally from success.
Patience & focus
Ponies donāt respond to rushing. Children learn to slow down, notice details, and stay present ā often without realising theyāre practising concentration skills.
New experiences
We gently introduce new situations like Pony Agility obstacle courses, helping children approach the unfamiliar with curiosity instead of fear.
The real magic
By the end of a session, children rarely talk about ālearning skillsā.
They talk about:
āShe trusted meā
āHe followed meā
āShe chose meā
"He is so fluffy and warm.ā
āI think weāre friends now.ā
āCan I come back and see her again?ā
And thatās exactly the point.
They arenāt just learning about horses. They are learning how their behaviour affects the world around them ā and discovering they are capable, calm, and confident.
